The Roman Jar Planter — Tall Whitewash Aged Ceramic Jar | 3 Sizes
The Tallest Jar in the Range. And the Most Dramatic.
The Roman Jar Planter is the standout piece of the Atlantis collection for one simple reason: it goes up.
All three sizes — Small, Medium, and Large — are over 95cm tall. The Large reaches 118cm, making it one of the tallest ceramic jar planters available in Australia. Yet it stays surprisingly slender, with a narrow neck and a quietly tapered form that references thousands of years of Roman amphora design.
This is a jar that fills a room or a garden vertically without taking up much floor space at all. It creates height, drama, and presence in a way that wide, squat pots never can. And finished in the same crusty whitewash glaze as the rest of the Atlantis range — pale chalk to warm toasted tones, with those occasional hints of turquoise — it looks like something genuinely pulled from an ancient Roman shipwreck.
This is not a water feature — it is a planting vessel. However, it is frost resistant and rated suitable for water feature applications if you choose to use it that way.
Named After Rome. Built to Last Like Rome.
The Romans were masters of the tall, slender storage jar — the amphora. Designed to be stacked in ships' hulls and lined up in warehouses, the Roman jar form has remained one of the most recognisable vessel shapes in history. Tall. Narrow. Purposeful. Elegant in its simplicity.
The Roman Jar Planter captures all of that. The proportions are long and lean, tapering gently from a modest belly to a narrow neck. Unlike the round, generous Skorpio or the wide-mouthed open bowl shapes, the Roman Jar is restrained and upright — a jar that stands at attention rather than spreading out.
Place one alone as a solo statement. Pair two flanking a doorway or gate. Line three or four along a wall or fence for a colonnade effect that looks like a stage set for something epic.
All Three Sizes Are Impressively Tall
This is what makes the Roman Jar truly unique in the Atlantis range. Even the Small is 96cm tall. The Medium reaches 104cm. The Large stands 118cm. There is no compact, modest option here — every Roman Jar is a tall, commanding presence. The only thing that changes between sizes is how wide it is and how much it can hold.
If you want tall — really tall — this is your jar.
The Narrowest Opening in the Range
The Roman Jar has the most slender neck opening of any jar in the Atlantis collection:
-
Small: 21.5cm opening
-
Medium: 26.5cm opening
-
Large: 34cm opening
This narrow neck is intentional. It's what gives the Roman Jar its distinctly architectural, column-like silhouette. But it does mean planting choices need to be considered carefully — slender, upright plants that thread through the neck cleanly are the way to go. Think of it less as a planter and more as a pedestal for a single, perfectly chosen plant.
Or don't plant it at all. The Roman Jar is extraordinary as a pure decorative object.
The Whitewash Glaze — Ancient by Design
Like every piece in the Atlantis range, the Roman Jar is finished in the hand-applied crusty glaze that looks like it spent decades beneath the sea. The tones shift from pale whitish chalk to warm toasted sandy tones, with occasional hints of turquoise that emerge and disappear as the light changes.
Because every jar is hand-made, no two Roman Jar Planters look the same. The texture, the pattern of tones, the distribution of turquoise — all of it varies naturally between pieces. You are buying a genuinely individual, one-of-a-kind ceramic object.
Please note: Dimensions are approximate as each jar is hand-made. Slight surface shedding when first unwrapped is normal and does not affect quality.

The Roman Jar sits between the Kos Jar's narrow drama and the Skorpio's wide generosity. It offers a slightly wider opening than the Kos, enough to accommodate a small feature plant, while keeping the tall, slender column-like proportions that make this range so special.
What to Plant In It
The narrow neck opening rewards plants with slender, upright profiles:
✔ Ornamental grasses — flowing and graceful, spectacular against the pale glaze
✔ Papyrus — tall, dramatic, and ideal for water feature use if desired
✔ Slim standard trees — olive, bay laurel, or lemon on a clean single stem
✔ Upright rosemary or lavender standards — beautifully fragrant and in perfect proportion
✔ Clumping bamboo — elegant vertical columns inside a vertical jar
✔ Single architectural stems — sometimes the most powerful plant is the simplest one
Or leave it empty and let the jar speak for itself. At 118cm and covered in a glaze that looks genuinely ancient, it doesn't need help.
