The Kos Jar Planter — Tall Whitewash Aged Ceramic Jar | 2 Sizes
Tall, Narrow, and Unlike Anything Else in Your Garden
Most tall pots are wide. The Kos Jar Planter is not.
This is a genuinely slender, towering jar — the Large stands 122cm tall on a base just 29cm wide. It goes up. Way up. It occupies almost no floor space yet commands the eye from across a garden, a courtyard, or a room. It's the kind of pot that makes people walk over for a closer look.
And when they get close, the finish stops them in their tracks.
The Kos Jar's crusty glaze ranges from whitish to toasted sandy tones, occasionally with hints of turquoise — as if it genuinely spent decades on the Greek seabed before washing ashore. No two jars look the same. Every piece is one of a kind.
This is not a water feature — it is a planting vessel. However, it is frost resistant and rated suitable for use in water feature applications if you choose to use it that way.
Named After a Greek Island. Looks Like It Came From the Sea.
Kos is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea — warm, sun-bleached, ancient, and beautiful. The jar captures all of that in ceramic form.
The whitewashed, weathered glaze is the standout feature here. Unlike the darker ocean tones of the standard Alibaba Jar, or the golden warmth of the Helios range, the Kos Jar is pale and light — closer to chalky white, bleached driftwood, and sun-faded stone than anything earthy or dark. The occasional flicker of turquoise in the glaze adds a touch of Aegean sea colour that is entirely unexpected and completely beautiful.
It's a finish that suits bright, coastal, and contemporary spaces exceptionally well. Against white rendered walls, pale paving, or blue water, the Kos Jar looks absolutely at home.
Please note: The crusty glaze varies naturally between pieces, and dimensions are approximate as each jar is hand-made. Slight shedding when first unwrapped is normal and does not affect quality.
Very Tall. Very Narrow. Very Deliberate.
The proportions of the Kos Jar are what make it so memorable.
The Large (D63cm × H122cm) is over 1.2 metres tall — chest height on most adults — yet only 63cm at its widest point, with a narrow 26cm opening at the top. The base is just 29cm across. It takes up almost no ground space while filling an enormous amount of vertical space.
The Small (D49cm × H105cm) is still over a metre tall, with a similarly slender profile. Even the "small" version has serious presence.
Use it in a garden where space is tight but height is needed. Use it in a corner that feels empty and flat. Use a pair flanking an entryway. Or use a group of three at different angles for a sculptural installation. The Kos Jar works brilliantly in multiples — a cluster of two or three creates an instant garden moment that looks like it was designed by a professional.
The Glaze That Changes With the Light
The Kos Jar's crusty whitewash glaze isn't a single flat colour. It shifts as you move around it and as the light changes throughout the day.
In morning sun it reads almost pure white, pale and clean. In afternoon light the toasted sandy tones come out — warmer, more textured, more complex. In shade or on an overcast day, the hints of turquoise become more visible, lending the jar a subtle, unexpected depth.
This is a jar that reveals itself slowly. The more time you spend with it, the more you notice.
What to Plant In It
The narrow opening (26cm on the Large, 23cm on the Small) means planting choices need to be slender enough to thread through the neck. The best options are:
✔ Tall ornamental grasses — fountain grass, pennisetum, or miscanthus — flowing and graceful
✔ Papyrus — upright, architectural, and spectacular both in and out of water
✔ Slim single-stem standards — a small olive, bay laurel, or rosemary standard on a clean stem
✔ Thin-stemmed bamboo (clumping) — elegant and vertical, in perfect proportion with the jar
✔ Aquatic plants — if using as a water feature, papyrus and water iris are perfect
Or simply display it empty. The Kos Jar is confident enough to stand on its own as pure garden sculpture — no plant required.
