The Alibaba Jar Planter — Aged Ocean-Look Ceramic Jar | D58cm × H87cm
Some Shapes Are Timeless for a Reason
The round-bellied, narrow-necked jar is one of the oldest and most recognised vessel shapes in human history. From ancient Persia to Mediterranean markets, this form has been made, traded, and treasured for thousands of years. And it still looks remarkable today.
The Alibaba Jar Planter brings that classic silhouette into your garden, courtyard, or outdoor space — finished to look like it spent a century on the ocean floor and was only recently brought back to the surface.
It's brand new. It looks ancient. That's the whole point.
This is not a water feature — it is a planting vessel. However, it is frost resistant and rated suitable for use in water feature applications if you choose to use it that way.
The Shape That Does All the Work
The Alibaba Jar's proportions are what make it so satisfying to look at. A wide, rounded belly at 58cm across gives it generous visual presence. A narrow neck at just 29cm opening pulls the eye upward. And a tall profile at 87cm means it commands vertical space without feeling top-heavy.
The result is a jar that looks full and substantial from a distance, refined and considered up close. Place it at the end of a garden path, beside a gate, against a wall, or as a standalone feature in a courtyard — it simply works in every position.
Because the opening is narrow at just 29cm, this jar is best used as a pure decorative statement or planted with upright, slender plants that suit the proportions. Think tall grasses, bamboo, a single-stem olive, or a slim ornamental tree. The narrow neck is part of what makes this jar so beautiful — it keeps the form clean and architectural.
The Ocean-Salvaged Finish — What Makes Atlantis Different
Every Alibaba Jar Planter is crafted by the Atlantis team to look as though it has been pulled from the seabed. The surface is encrusted, mottled, and textured in a way that's impossible to fake with a standard paint or glaze. Areas of lighter and darker tone shift across the surface naturally, creating a piece that looks genuinely aged and weathered rather than factory-finished.
No two jars look exactly alike. The variation in texture and tone is intentional — it's what gives each piece its individual character.
Please note: A small amount of surface shedding may occur when the jar is first unwrapped from its protective film. This is completely normal and does not affect the quality of the piece.
Built to Last
The aged look might suggest delicacy. It's the opposite.
The Alibaba Jar is frost resistant — suitable for all Australian climates including the colder southern states. At 55kg, it's substantial enough to stay put in wind and weather, yet manageable enough to place and position without specialist equipment. The 152-litre internal volume offers serious planting depth for the right plant choices.
What to Plant In It
The narrow 29cm opening means you'll want plants that suit the proportions. The best choices are:
✔ Upright ornamental grasses — soft, flowing, and spectacular against the textured surface
✔ Slim single-stem trees — olive, lemon, bay laurel, or ornamental pear on a standard
✔ Bamboo (clumping varieties) — bold, vertical, and right at home in a tall narrow jar
✔ Papyrus or tall aquatic grasses — especially if you're using it as a water feature
✔ A single architectural stem — sometimes the simplest planting is the most powerful
Or leave it empty. Honestly, the jar is striking enough on its own. In the right spot, an unplanted Alibaba Jar is a piece of garden sculpture, not just a pot.

A Note on the Narrow Opening
At 29cm, the neck opening is significantly narrower than most planters of this size. This is a deliberate design feature — it's what gives the jar its classic, beautiful proportions. It does mean planting choices need to suit the narrow entry point. Slender root balls, bare-rooted plants, ornamental grasses, and bamboo all work well. If you need a wider opening for larger plantings, take a look at our Helios Pharaoh Jar Planter which offers a 61cm opening at a similar price point.
